Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Collection Review: Size Chart vs. Tag, and a Cold-Wash Print Check

We ordered two colourways, measured both at chest, shoulder and length, photographed tags and batch stamps, then cold-washed and air-dried them. The cotton weight is real; the size chart is the part you have to read carefully.

Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Collection Review: Size Chart vs. Tag, and a Cold-Wash Print Check

The Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Collection is less a single garment than a catalogue behind one SKU. Listing 7715767163 covers S through XXL and a colourway list long enough that the D167, D168, D115, D169, D170, D081, D097 and D109 groups alone pair white or black bases with red, yellow, grey, blue, green, brown, purple, cyan and pink, with black1, black2, black3 and white1 rounding it out. We ordered two tees from different colour groups so the print could be compared side by side, then worked through the checks our desk runs on every apparel order.

How we checked it

The parcel was photographed on the grey mat with a dated card before it was opened, and we noted crush damage on the outer bag along one edge — the folded tees inside were unaffected. Each shirt was measured at three points (chest, shoulder and back length) against the seller's own size chart, with tags and batch stamps photographed for the file. Seam allowance was inspected at the shoulder and hem, and both tees went through one cold wash and air dry before being measured again.

The sizing question is the real decision

Buyer reports genuinely conflict, and we could not resolve them into a single answer. Several owners on r/bapeheads describe the fit as Asian sizing, saying that someone who normally wears XL in Gap or 5.11 often needs XXL in Bape. Others in the same community call it true to size, and advise going up only if you sit between sizes. A video reviewer around 180 cm and 88 kg found the XL too snug for his taste, which is exactly the complaint you would expect if the intended relaxed cut runs short of Western expectations.

"I would call it Asian sizing. I normally wear XL with 5.11 and Gap tees. When it comes to Evisu and Bathing Ape I go XXL."

Our own two tees landed inside the seller's stated 2–3 cm tolerance at all three measuring points, which means the chart itself is usable — the risk is in assuming that a letter size means the same thing it does at a mall brand. Compare the chart numbers to a shirt you already like, not to the size you usually buy.

Cotton weight, print and the wash

The midweight body behaves the way 250–300 gsm cotton should: opaque, breathable, and structured enough to hold the boxy shape without collapsing at the shoulder. Long-time Bape owners are unusually consistent about print care, and it is the one piece of advice worth following on this collection.

"My Bape shirts never crack. Had em for years. I wash on cold and hang em up. Never dry because the heat makes the screen print crack up."

After one cold wash and air dry, both prints stayed sharp and the fit change was minimal. We kept the tees out of the dryer, which is where owners say the damage happens.

Two cautions we are not able to clear

  • Fabric feel has changed, according to one retail buyer. A post on Threads described current Bape tee fabric as smoother and cooler than the older, slightly coarser cotton, comparing it to a lightweight synthetic-feel knit, and noted the garment was now made in China. We cannot verify whether the pieces in this listing share that batch, but if your reference point is an older Bape tee, expect a different hand feel.
  • A smell was reported on unbagging. The same buyer described a faint chemical, formaldehyde-like odour and said a smell was the one thing they could not accept. Our two tees aired out without incident, but this is a reported risk rather than a resolved one.

Buying notes for a 50-plus colourway listing

  • Pick the exact colour string — D167 white-red and D168 white-red are different print layouts, not two names for one shirt.
  • Ask your agent for QC photos of the front print and the neck label before the parcel ships; the print is the whole point of the design.
  • Keep the cold-wash and hang-dry routine, and treat the dryer as the one step that shortens the shirt's life.
  • We verified two colourways from a very long list, so we cannot speak to colour accuracy across every option.

How we tested

Two colourways ordered in August 2026. Unboxing was filmed and packaging photographed before opening, including crush damage on one bag edge. Each tee was measured at chest, shoulder and length against the seller's chart, tags and batch stamps photographed, then cold-washed and air-dried. Two editors signed off the fit score.

How many colourways does this listing actually cover?

The colour list runs to more than fifty strings. White and black bases are paired with red, yellow, grey, blue, green, brown, purple, cyan or pink across the D167, D168, D115, D169, D170, D081, D097 and D109 groups, plus black1, black2, black3 and white1. D167 white-red and D168 white-red are different print layouts.

Is 250–300 gsm too heavy for summer?

No. The listing targets summer casual wear, and our samples felt breathable with no see-through at the chest. It is a midweight cotton, so it hangs with some structure rather than draping like a thin 150 gsm tee, but it does not read as a winter-weight blank.

What happened to the fit after one cold wash?

Shrinkage stayed inside the listing's stated 2–3 cm tolerance, and the boxy shape held. We air-dried both tees; owners warn that dryer heat is what cracks the print, which is the one care step worth taking seriously here.
